1930s inspired Polar Snow Crawler PSC-001

I want to tell you about a very interesting design project - crawler tractor for Antarctica, built based on the vast Antarctic Snow Cruiser 30s. Antarctic Snow Cruiser was designed by Thomas Poulter and used during the Antarctic expedition under the command of Admiral Richard Byrd Jr.. That's just disgusting tractor showed himself - his tires-slicks were virtually useless on snow and ice.

Do Poulter and failed to improve the design of the tractor: his plans interfered Second World War. Antarctic Snow Cruiser was left to "die" in the Arctic. But now, more than 70 years later, we can once again rethink the concept of the Antarctic tractor with this design project.

He called Polar Snow Crawler PSC-001, and it is similar in size to the original trailer. The main difference - instead of useless sprockets the better tracks in the snow. On board the PSC-001 - all necessary equipment for work and life scientists who study the earth permafrost. Inside there is a huge body sleeps, kitchen, small bathroom and plenty of space for equipment, laboratories and spare parts.

During long expeditions, PSC-001 can pull a few specialized modules. The same principle was used in the construction of the snow train Alaskan Land Train mid 50s.

Inside the tractor crew are comfortable, but practical working and living conditions. The cabin has room for two operators, as well as the site for a few more observers. Tractor operated by a joystick located on the right arm of the driver's seat. Multifunction touch screen displays give information about weather, navigation and communication. Monitor may also broadcast information from any of the external cameras.

Located behind the cab laboratory research personnel. In them, scientists can study the data and conduct research. Under the laboratories is a diesel-electric propulsion system. Laboratories are located near the crew cabin with 4 beds, shower compartment, bathroom and kitchen.

Body to overcome obstacles can be raised above the ground. And if a solid surface under the tracks ends, the PSC-001 can even swim.

The design of the original Antarctic Snow Cruiser entered a small plane. PSC-001 is equipped with a UAV, ie the same features, but in a much more compact form. Running drone going through a hatch in the roof.

Of course, PSC-001 is not suitable for production. It's just a look at what could be the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, if Poulter was born in the 80s.
